The propagation of succulents from leaf cuttings can be an interesting and pleasing process for anyone who loves these amazing plants.

Whether you're new to growing plants indoors, or you've been enjoying gardening houseplants for quite a while, you may have a succulent plant you would like to use the leaves of to create a new one, or more than one.

As an obsessed succulent and cactus lover, I'm here to provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to grow succulents from leaves.

The following steps are pretty simple, and almost guaranteed to give you great results.

So, let's dive right in and explore this simple and exciting process.

Before you get started growing succulents from leaf cuttings, you should gather these necessary materials...

Here's what you'll need:

  1. Healthy Succulent Leaves: With most succulent plants you can grow another plant from even just one leaf if that's all you have access to. And, of course, you can choose leaves from a healthy succulent plant. It's best to use leaves that are plump and free from any signs of damage or disease.

  2. Basic Succulent Potting Soil Mix: Succulents do require well-draining soil to thrive. You can purchase a commercial succulent mix or create your own by mixing 3 parts/cups potting soil with 2 parts/cups sand and 1 part/cup perlite and mix them all together.

  3. A Shallow Container or Tray: Or course you'll need a container to plant the leaves in. It should have drainage holes, more than one drainage hole is best, to prevent overwatering.

  4. Spray Bottle: This will be used to mist the leaves, as succulents prefer high humidity during propagation.

  5. Indirect Light Space: Place your container in a spot with bright, indirect sunlight. Avoid direct sun, as it can scorch the leaves.

Step-by-Step Succulent leaf propagation guide:

  1. Choose Your Leaves: Gently twist or pull healthy leaves from the succulent plant you choose. It's necessary to make sure that the leaf comes off with a bit of stem attached. This stem is where the new plant will eventually sprout.

  2. Callous Formation: Place the leaf or separated leaves on a tray or plate and let them air dry for a few days. This allows a callous to form over the open end, which helps prevent rot when you plant them.

  3. Planting: Once the leaves have calloused, plant them in the well-draining soil mix. Add the calloused end about half an inch into the soil. At this point you can plant several leaves in the same container.

  4. Misting: Use a spray bottle to mist the soil and the top of the leaves. This will create a humid environment, which stimulates rooting succulent leaves and baby plant growth. Mist the soil often to preserve the humidity. You want to keep the top of the soil damp.

  5. Patience: Propagating succulents from leaves does require patience. It may take several weeks to see any signs of growth. So be patient and resist the urge to overwater.

  6. Root Development: After a few weeks, you should notice tiny roots coming up from the stem end of the leaf. This is a sure sign that your propagation is on the right track.

  7. Leaf Growth: Over time, you'll also see small rosettes or baby plants forming at the base of the leaf. These are the new succulents that will eventually grow into mature plants.

  8. Transplanting: When the baby plants have developed several sets of leaves and are big enough to handle, carefully transplant them into individual pots with well-draining soil.

  9. Care for Young Succulents: Now you'll need to place the young succulents in a spot with bright, indirect light, and water them sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out between watering to prevent root rot.

  10. Enjoy Your New Succulents: As your propagated succulents grow, you'll have the satisfaction of knowing you started them from leaves. They will thrive and bring a touch of nature to your space.

Remember, not all succulent species propagate equally, and some may be more challenging than others.

However, with patience and care, you can successfully grow new plants from succulents leaf cuttings, even if you're trying to save just one imperfect leaf from your plant. It's a delightful way to extend your collection and share the beauty of these unique plants with others.

Enjoy experimenting with different succulent species and leaf types, because each one might have its own quirks when it comes to how to grow succulents from leaves.

Happy succulent gardening!
